Working in the automotive industry and want
to join the Register?

Whether you’re in management or customer service, in a technical or a non-technical role, there’s an entry route to suit you.

Join through IMI Membership or IMI Accreditation.

IMI membership

If you have a nationally-recognised qualification and relevant automotive experience, become a member of the IMI to be automatically added to IMI’s Professional Register.

IMI offers five levels of membership:

  • Fellow (FIMI)
  • Member (MIMI)
  • Associate (AMIMI)
  • Licentiate (LIMI)
  • Affiliate (AffIMI)*

*Affiliate members do not appear on the Register but may be able to upgrade to full membership, and be added as they gain further experience and qualifications

IMI members on the Professional Register are required to keep their skills and knowledge up to date through continuing professional development (CPD), the equivalent of four days’ training a year. We offer a range of automotive courses and development opportunities to help you meet these CPD commitments.

IMI Accreditation

IMI Accreditation is a practical, non-academic way to demonstrate individual capability, providing independent proof of current competence, knowledge and skills.

Focused on the Light Vehicle area of the automotive sector, IMI Accreditation encompasses everyone within this area, from individuals working directly on vehicles to those advising customers or managing a dealership.

Three different types of accreditation reflect the diverse range of roles within the motor industry: technical, customer facing and management

To maintain your accredited status, you’ll need to renew your accreditation every three years, either through a full reassessment or, for technicians, through flexible update modules
